Had it for six months now, very good w/minor quirksNov 22, 2009 So this was the first GPS I've bought before. I bought it awhile before a big road trip I was taking to the northeast US (from Madison, WI) so I could get acclimated to it. Since, I've been on the trip and didn't get lost and argue with family members about where we were once (unlike most every other trip), so that was a big plus. I like being able to add via points when you don't agree with the route it gives you. Also, the time of arrival is pretty amazing, 3 hour trips on back roads and its within a minute or two of the right time. Only traffic or red lights seem to stop that from being right on. Was very helpful when deciding if we had time to make it to a party 3 hours away one day, we made it only 10 minutes late, just like the device told us 3 hours earlier.
A couple minor annoyances I had out east was when I wanted to go around NYC, I had a fairly specific way I wanted to take interstates to go around it, and even after adding a number of via points, it seemed to just turn the route planning in circles and really was hosed up, I ended up having to use it just as a "where am I" thing while following a good old map for what roads I wanted to take. I think when its in a major city, there's just too many roads for its programming to decide from that if you want to change it any, its a major pain. Also, for some reason going around Buffalo, it lost sattellite signals for a couple hours, and I ended up having to take the battery out and putting it back in again to reset it and get the signal back. Not sure what that was about, it only happened that one time.
But other than that, its been great. Very helpful at night when you're in a city you don't know and are trying to find a place to eat or your hotel 15 miles away in the suburbs and don't know where you're going. Normal atlases and state maps aren't going to have all those little city maps, and this thing not only has them all but tells you exactly when to turn and how long to your next turn.
It Gets Me ThereNov 13, 2009 This is my 2nd Garmin GPS system after the 1st one was stolen. Overall, I love it because I am geographically inept and it makes everything simple. There are several features I do not need, but have learned to use and now very much appreciate such as: BLUETOOTH...so that I can link it to my cell phone and talk hands free, it is simple to use - I have learned to upload music, books on tape, photos, etc. onto it from several different sources in no time, odometer/speedometer/compass/route time, etc. I have not used any other brand of GPS so I do not know how it compares. The downside is the length of time it takes to acquire satellite reception at times AND routing. I am not always guided through the shortest and smartest route to my destination despite keeping the maps updated at [...]. Another negative would be the length of time a fully charged Garmin lasts...which is not very long.
All-in-all, my Garmin has helped me more than it has disappointed me and I am very happy with it and highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a good GPS.
My First GPS and I love it.Nov 06, 2009 My wife thought I was purchasing another toy until she had to use it one day. Her attitude changed immediately, especially when she was able to easily navigate through some unknown territory and didn't get lost.
When you purchase this cool little device, be sure to connect it to your computer and update the maps....all free from Garmin. The voices leave a lot to be desired. I use Emily from England because she is understandable. Jill from the USA sounds like a "Valley Girl" and that alone will get you lost!
I love the wide screen and all of the features. A good product that you WILL enjoy using.
Needs more maps in small and mid-size areasOct 12, 2009 The device itself is fantastic and works as advertised. However, I was very disappointed to find how poorly areas are mapped in the state of Kansas, other than Kansas City and Topkea (probably Wichita as well, although i have not had occassion yet to try). Entire neighborhoods in my town of 20,000 people, as well as entire towns and highway exits within an hour of Topeka. In both cases, the roads and /or neighborhoods are well over 5 yers old. If you are rural or semi- rural, test out a device from a friend before you buy.
GarminOct 04, 2009 Received refurbished model in great condition. Easy to use - able to put to use almost immediately. Very reasonable price.
