Uniden marine band 2-way hand heldMar 16, 2010 Great range, battery life is good too, I like this radio a lot. I'm planning to get a second one.
Excellent VHF handheld radioMar 02, 2010 This radio was exactly what I needed. It seems solidly built, has a nice rubber feel, somewhat heavy but indicative of the high quality of the battery and other components. Regarding the battery, I have only used it for a few days now but it is still at full charge. Reception is very clear. A strong recommendation.
VHF Radio ReviewNov 30, 2009 Well, what can I say--it came packaged nicely and has two battery packs and the accessor(ies) seem like decent quality. It's not overloaded with gimmicky features which is a plus for me. The radio works well but it's too soon to say how it will work long term--the proof is in how these things work a year or two later. So far so good!

UNIDEN MHS 350 Handheld Submersible Marine 2-Way VHF RadioNov 12, 2009 FOR KAYAK USERS (Hawaii -USA):
The UNIDEN MHS 350 HANDHELD (Submersible) MARINE 2-WAY VHF RADIO is built on a metal chasis (not plastic), is a highly durable, waterproof (rated submersible) VHF marine radio with exceptional audio clarity, reception and volume. Battery life is also extremely long and its fast battery charge feature can't be beat.
I purchased this model as an emergency 2-way radio for listening to and calling Channel 16 and 9 while saltwater kayaking in Hawaii. The radio will pick up ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore transmissions, harbor port, NOAA weather and US COAST GUARD tranmissions etc.
The display window on the unit is large and easily viewed, the controls are easily accessible, easily operated and intuitive. This unit is a complete package that includes a fast charger unit, extra battery, extras, and is basically charge-n-go.
It picks up transmissions both on sea and land. I have even picked up US Coast Guard advisory on Channel 16 (e.g. a stalled 35-foot vessel off Chinaman's Hat in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu) of all places, from my living room far away from the ocean! In scanning mode, it will pick up US COAST GUARD advisories, NOAA weather, harbor communications etc. and whatever channels transmitting. The marine VHF frequencies are remarkably disciplined without juvenile or delinquent transmissions so it's nice to keep the radio on in scan mode while paddling. By law, seacraft are required to monitor channel 16 and/or 9 so that is reassuring. I don't think kayakers are required to monitor Channel 16 or 9, but I keep it on while paddling since I use this radio as an emergency radio.
Since I depend on this radio as my emergency backup, I purchased a separate AQUAPAC (brandname)transparent waterproof pouch to keep this radio protected from direct exposure to saltwater/rain/sand/dust. Since kayaking is exposed to splashes a high quality waterproof pouch that allows operating the controls and is large enough to fit the antenna is highly recommended. Also when choosing a waterproof pouch for your radio, keep in mind the position of the on/off/volume dials as some pouches are designed for left or right hand use. The overall dimension of the pouch should be large enough to accommodate easy movement with radio and antenna operational.
I am very happy with my UNIDEN MHS 350 HANDHELD MARINE 2-WAY VHF RADIO and it came quickly via Amazon.com with free shipping!!

Great RadioJun 16, 2009 This is the second Uniden marine radio I've purchased for use while ocean kayaking. The first one is a larger model with built in GPS functionality. I bought this one because it's a lot smaller and I don't need the GPS feature for most of the paddling I do. So far this one is measuring up to the excellent quality that I've experienced with my first radio. I keep the radio either on deck or clipped to my PFD, and despite the regular exposure to water, it keeps on working. Combined with excellent battery life (an extra battery is included) and easy to use controls, this is a great product.
