At least for Mac 10.6, a real hassleMar 18, 2010 The drive itself I am sure is fine, but the controller for it is terrible. At least on Mac OS 10.6, getting the drive to be recognized entails this strange ritual of unplugging it for a few minutes, then re-powering & reconnecting it. A few times after staying connected to the same machine, the drive would remain mounted, but no subfolders were readable. Again, un-power it, wait a few minutes, then re-power it. I should note that I don't have problems with any other external drives. Using it for Time Machine back-ups is awkward, at best. I ended up buying a different external enclosure, cracking open the My Book, install the drive in the new enclosure, and everything is fine. There is something about the controller in the My Book case that makes it unreliable. I talked to another person who had to use the same solution in order to keep the drive (and data on it). The drive itself is fine, the enclosure it's in: not worth the hassle.
I love My 1 TB BookMar 17, 2010 It's great. I use it for editing my films. Great product. I hate the newer models.
Not Worth ItFeb 24, 2010 Every WD hard drive I have purchased in the past has performed well and lasted a long time. I haven't had this drive a year, and I have already had to replace the case twice. I was using this drive at work when the PC would not recognize it. I took it home and still nothing. It wasn't until I went online and read a bunch of reviews and articles on troubleshooting the drive that I realized the case is crap. I swapped the case for another since it was too late to take it back and WD would take forever to send it back if I sent it to them. The last case worked for maybe 6 months before it gave out. Not only does the case not work but neither does the drive. At the same time as my My Book purchase, I purchased a Hitachi 1 TB OEM 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive for 69.99 and case for 7.99, and it is still going strong. Sometimes you just can't go by a name.
Perfect but crashed , but works againFeb 21, 2010 this product recently crashed, but i think its due to my fault. i never defragmented it since i got it, and its been a year now.... it is working now, after it crashed by a miracle, some how i got it to work and immediately defragmented it, and now its ok... i couldnt defragment it because windows wouldn't let me so i had to download a defragmenter (ex:defragler) from onlin and now its good, it works again, i have to re-format it to make it 100% healthy again BUT i cant cuz i dont have the space to back up my stuff on the pc, which is because its a Terabyte... but besides that i recommend buying this product, looks good, its got a e-lock at the back for protection against theft... its good...
Has Some flaws, but nothing's Perfect.Feb 14, 2010 I've Had one of these for over a year, and I almost filled it up already. I may have dropped it once or twice but it's still good. I have had it on for quite a while, and it still stays on, though the only main problem I've had with this product is after a while of having it and storing it, it has stopped working an infortunate amount of times, now it's to the point to where if I don't keep it at a certain point on my book shelf, it won't work at all, though I've kept it there for over 3 months, and never had a problem until just recently, though it always comes back. I guess my conclusion would be that it's a fighter if I ever saw one, and it's definetley worth the asking price!
